Amalar Tablet (sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine 500mg/25mg) is a fixed‑dose combination antimalarial medication used for the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by susceptible Plasmodium species. It works by inhibiting folate synthesis in the parasite, helping to clear the infection.
Who is it for
This medicine is prescribed for adults and children for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria or as a prophylactic in areas with drug‑sensitive malaria. It should not be used by individuals allergic to sulfa drugs, those with severe liver or kidney disease, or in the first trimester of pregnancy unless directed by a doctor. People with severe malaria or G6PD deficiency should seek alternative treatment.
Dosage
The usual adult treatment dose is a single dose of 1 to 2 tablets taken after a meal; the exact dose depends on body weight and medical advice. For prophylaxis, one dose is taken weekly starting one week before travel and continuing for four weeks after leaving the malaria area. Children are dosed by weight.
